Accessibility Guidelines skill
The Accessibility Guidelines skill is an org skill in the Optimizely Opal Skills Directory that sets your organization's web accessibility standards so every page meets inclusion targets while also improving SEO and AI search visibility.
It applies to everyone in your organization. An administrator installs and configures it once.
Skill details
- Shortcut – /accessibility-guidelines
- Type – Org skill
- Setup – Required
What the skill does
- Audits pages and content against the most frequently failed WCAG 2.2 A and AA criteria.
- Writes accessible alt text, headings, link text, form errors, and transcripts.
- Labels every finding as Verified, Likely, or Manual check needed, and rates it Critical, High, Medium, or Low with an effort size.
- Turns findings into a dated roadmap, and notes SEO and AI search benefits where they apply.
Before you begin
- You must have the Manage Instructions permission to install this skill. If you do not, click Request in the Skills Directory to ask an administrator to install it.
- Opal can use a connected browser, web fetch, crawler, or accessibility scanner. Without one, paste HTML or upload a saved page.
- Have your answers and files ready. Opal asks for them during setup.
Information Opal asks for
Opal asks for the following during setup. You can skip optional items.
- Website and What This Covers (Required) – Your scope.
- Accessibility Target and Deadline (Required) – If your answer is vague, Opal applies WCAG 2.2 AA with a proposed 12-month deadline and tells you.
- Existing Audit or Accessibility Statement (Optional) – A prior audit or conformance report. If you skip this, the first audit becomes your baseline.
- Brand Colors and Known Exceptions (Optional) – If you skip this, Opal measures contrast from the page and proposes no new colors.
- Anything Specific to Your Team (Optional) – Owner routing, fix timelines, and reporting language.
Install the skill
- Go to Directory > Skills.
- Find Accessibility Guidelines and click Install.
- In the Setup required dialog, click Set up in chat.
- Answer Opal's questions and upload any files it asks for.
- Confirm the details when Opal asks.
For details about browsing, installing, updating, and uninstalling skills, see Skills Directory overview.
Use the skill
After setup, enter /accessibility-guidelines in Opal Chat to run the skill on demand. Opal also applies it automatically when your request matches its When to use conditions. Try prompts like the following:
- Audit this page for accessibility.
- Write alt text for these images.
- Create an accessibility roadmap for the next 12 months.
Things to know
- Opal can't run assistive technology or test with a real keyboard. Every report lists the manual checks to complete.
- Opal never declares legal compliance. Have legal review any public accessibility statement.
- Content that loads with JavaScript can't be fully checked from page source, so those findings are capped at Likely.
Update the skill
When Optimizely publishes a new version, Update displays on the skill's card in the Skills Directory. Opal keeps the information you provided during setup and asks only for anything the new version adds. See Update a skill.
