Accessibility Basics
Accessibility means designing services so that they are usable by as many people as possible, regardless of their abilities or limitations. In Germany, the Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) has regulated the accessibility of digital products and services since June 28, 2025.
The Accessibility Test feature
Accessibility testing is available in the Design Editor for emails, the older Template Kit editor does not support automated accessibility testing. Entries on the results page that are labelled with WCAG refer to legally required accessibility criteria.
Accessible HTML
For email accessibility, correct HTML syntax regarding tags, nesting, unique attributes, and IDs is essential to ensure error-free interpretation by screen readers. The Design Editor in Optimizely Campaign already creates HTML that meets these requirements.
Accessible multimedia content
To make images accessible, precise alternative text must be created that allows screen readers to read them aloud and provides access to the information for visually impaired people. The following elements require alternative text Images (photos, illustrations, logos) Graphics (diagrams, information displays) Icons (navigation icons, social media icons) Animations (GIFs, animated SVGs) Video and audio content For image elements (\<img>), the alt attribute is used.
Accessible Formatting
Text of two or more lines should be left-aligned. This improves readability by providing a consistent starting point for each line.
Usability and comfort
Text must be able to be enlarged up to 200% without losing content or functionality. The goal is to enable users with low visual acuity to display text at a readable size without compromising the usability of the page.
