Ask for consent
The GDPR rules for consent are much more strict than the previous legislation. To collect PII data, you must ensure consent from anyone about whom you want to collect data.
Collect data
You can collect personal data variously, such as by user registration, having web forms, or tracking user statistics (by using Google Analytics, Optimizely Data Platform (ODP), visitors groups, and so on). GDPR does not forbid you from collecting data but requires you to be very specific; you are allowed to collect data only for a specific purpose.
Data breaches
You should prepare for a data breach, a situation where you have not handled PII data according to GDPR. Humans and automatic systems can make errors and use data that should not be used.
Deleted data
A data subject can ask for their PII data to be deleted. However, legal reasons may prevent you from deleting PII data.
Fetch and update data
A data subject has the right to access their personally identifiable information (PII) data and have it updated. You should automate updates, letting the data subject update personal data from your website.
GDPR guidelines
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation in the European Union that is immediately applicable and binding for member states. It took effect on May 25, 2018.
Store data
You should have a privacy policy explaining to your website visitors how you collect, use, store, and delete PII data. The link to the privacy policy can be found in the website footer and on registration forms, web forms, and other consent forms or messages.
Data guidelines
You may use collected PII data only in the following circumstances to fulfill legal obligations you have toward the data subject to fulfill legal obligations you have as a data controller for the purpose stated when receiving consent for data collection Under certain circumstances (see article 18), the data subject can stop you from using their PII data. In these cases, you must ensure the data is retained in your systems but not used.
