**Note**

The terms *audiences* and *segments* are interchangeable. Optimizely has updated all *segments* to *audiences* on the **Audiences** page and is updating the UI on other pages. See [Understand audiences](docId\:v-gHiL9jfINBey-4QNtFM) to get information on audiences.
:::

Product-based filters let you refine and control the information that your customers see in your content, such as not including an alternative product reference when focusing on a specific brand or category.

## Create a product filter

[Create a product-based filter](docId:1SXrAMaLAz-2u_TTw4U82) and then select **Products** for the **Feed** option to restrict the selectable fields when you configure the filter.

Product-based filters become available for use in the dynamic grid configuration options for your email touchpoints.

## Example: Send email using a filter

If you were the owner of a specialty golf shop and received new Titleist stock, the following example shows how to send an email announcing the new stock to your Titleist customers.

1. **Target the right audience** – As a specialty shop that prides itself on knowing what your customers are looking for, you want to avoid emailing everyone and instead create a customer audience in your one-time campaign that only consists of individuals whose last viewed product brand is Titleist.

2. **Create a Titleist product filter** – With the audience selected, ensure that the email only includes references to your Titleist stock by creating a product filter based on the brand. Save your drafted campaign before going to **Data Setup > Filters** to create your Titleist brand filter.

3. **Apply the filter to your campaign** – Apply the Titleist product filter to the dynamic grid in your campaign's email touchpoint and combine them with [ODP product recommendations](docId:_sIz5iOu2_dQnHq_vbCcc) to ensure that customers see products based on past preferences.

4. **Preview or test the filter results** – You can preview the personalization in the editor.
