You can generate read-only credentials in Mission Control for the target instance’s database in Optimizely Configured Commerce that remain active for 30 minutes. These credentials let you explore the database and perform read-only queries against it.

**Warning**

This action provides credentials to the target instance’s database, not a copy. Because of this, running queries could impact performance for the given instance if the queried dataset is large enough. To help avoid potential performance concerns when querying data, you should avoid large select queries, long-running queries, or anything that would read a large amount of data. This is especially important when using this action on production instances. If you have questions or concerns about querying the database, contact [Optimizely Support](mailto\:support@optimizely.com).

## Steps

1. Log in to Mission Control.
2. Go to **Customers** and select a customer.
3. Select a target Configured Commerce instance.
4. Click **Actions** on the instance page and select **Generate Database Credentials**.
5. (Optional) Schedule the action by toggling **Scheduled Execution** to **On** and selecting a time and date.
6. Review the details to confirm the selected instance (and scheduled time, if selected). ou can ignore any greyed-out or immutable fields because they are for development or debugging.
7. Click **Continue**. If scheduled, the action runs at the specified time. Otherwise, the action runs immediately.
8. Wait until the status is marked as **Complete** on the **Action Request** page. The action outputs the necessary credential details under **Action Request > Results**. These credentials are active for 30 minutes.
If the action fails, submit a ticket with [Optimizely Support](mailto\:support@optimizely.com) with a link to the failed action request page.

## Use credentials with SSMS

After you have generated the credentials, follow these steps to connect with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS):

1. Go to **Connect > Database Engine** in SSMS.
2. Enter the **Server Name**, **Username**, and **Password** from Mission Control.

3. Click **Connection Properties**.
4. Enter the **DatabaseName** under **Connect to database**.

5. Click **Connect**.

You can now use SSMS to write queries against your environment. See [Microsoft's documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssms/quickstarts/ssms-connect-query-sql-server?view=sql-server-ver16#create-a-database) for information on using SSMS.

**Note**

By default, you do not have to set the **Port**, although Mission Control provides one if needed.
