The **Video Production Planning** skill is a personal skill in the Optimizely Opal Skills Directory that guides video content planning from script ideation to thumbnails and descriptions, informed by the formats and topics that have already performed well for your channel.

It applies only to you. Any Opal user can install and configure it.

## Skill details

- **Shortcut** – `/video-production-planning`
- **Type** – Personal skill
- **Setup** – Required

## What the skill does

- Plans studio and shoot time, and structures script ideas into testable idea cards with an evidence grade and a greenlight score.
- Packages finished videos with titles, thumbnails, descriptions, chapters, and captions.
- Calibrates output to your own performance data instead of generic creator advice.
- Diagnoses underperformance across reach, click, hook, hold, and action.

## Before you begin

- Any Opal user can install this skill. Opal saves it as your own personal skill.
- Opal works best with a connected video, social, or web analytics tool. Without one, paste data. Output is then labeled as not yet calibrated.
- Have your answers and files ready. Opal asks for them during setup.

## Information Opal asks for

Opal asks for the following during setup. You can skip optional items.

- **What Your Videos Are For** (Required) – Your channels, audience, and goals.
- **Your Production Setup** (Required) – Studio, kit, crew, and turnaround. If you give little detail, Opal assumes one presenter, one camera, and a half day.
- **Performance Export** (Optional) – A file of your video performance.
- **What Has Worked and What Has Not** (Optional) – Your best and worst videos, one per line.
- **Thumbnail Examples** (Optional) – Images. Opal extracts palette, type weight, subject scale, and text position.
- **House Rules and Must-Haves** (Optional) – Opal asks before adding any legal line or disclaimer.

## Install the skill

1. Go to **Directory > Skills**.
2. Find **Video Production Planning** and click **Install**.
3. In the **Setup required** dialog, click **Set up in chat**.
4. Answer Opal's questions and upload any files it asks for.
5. Confirm the details when Opal asks.

For details about browsing, installing, updating, and uninstalling skills, see [Skills Directory overview](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).

## Use the skill

After setup, enter `/video-production-planning` in Opal Chat to run the skill on demand. Opal also applies it automatically when your request matches its **When to use** conditions. Try prompts like the following:

- *Plan a shoot day for these six videos.*
- *Write a script and hook options for a 90-second product explainer.*
- *Package this video with title options, a thumbnail concept, a description, and chapters.*

## Things to know

- Performance data that you upload during setup goes stale. Connect an analytics tool or paste fresh numbers to keep Opal calibrated.
- Opal works from scripts, transcripts, metrics, and images. It can't judge a cut without the video or timestamped frames.

## Update the skill

When Optimizely publishes a new version, **Update** displays on the skill's card in the Skills Directory. Opal keeps the information you provided during setup and asks only for anything the new version adds. See [Update a skill](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).
