The **Messaging Framework** skill is an org skill in the Optimizely Opal Skills Directory that maps your products and brands to the right messages for the right audiences, so your team always knows which story to tell and when to tell it.

It applies to everyone in your organization. An administrator installs and configures it once.

## Skill details

- **Shortcut** – `/messaging-framework`
- **Type** – Org skill
- **Setup** – Required

## What the skill does

- Recommends which brand or product to lead with for a given audience, buying stage, or situation.
- Keeps each product in its lane across web copy, campaigns, decks, talk tracks, and launch material.
- Checks your portfolio for overlap, orphaned products, and colliding pillars.
- Keeps beta and roadmap products out of external copy, and keeps proof with the product that earned it.

## Before you begin

- You must have the **Manage Instructions** permission to install this skill. If you do not, click **Request** in the Skills Directory to ask an administrator to install it.
- Have your answers and files ready. Opal asks for them during setup.

## Information Opal asks for

Opal asks for the following during setup. You can skip optional items.

- **Brands and Products** (Required) – One per line, with audience, status, and dependencies.
- **Core Message per Product** (Required) – Your company line, and each product's value proposition and pillars.
- **Messaging Framework Documents** (Optional) – Your existing framework. A newer upload wins.
- **Who Hears What** (Optional) – Rules for buying stages and intent signals. If you skip this, Opal routes by each product's audience.
- **Naming and Terminology** (Optional) – If you skip this, Opal uses the exact portfolio spelling and replaces retired names.
- **Claims, Proof, and Disclosure** (Optional) – If you skip this, Opal makes no numeric or superlative claims beyond your uploads and typed answers.

## Install the skill

1. Go to **Directory > Skills**.
2. Find **Messaging Framework** and click **Install**.
3. In the **Setup required** dialog, click **Set up in chat**.
4. Answer Opal's questions and upload any files it asks for.
5. Confirm the details when Opal asks.

For details about browsing, installing, updating, and uninstalling skills, see [Skills Directory overview](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).

## Use the skill

After setup, enter `/messaging-framework` in Opal Chat to run the skill on demand. Opal also applies it automatically when your request matches its **When to use** conditions. Try prompts like the following:

- *Which product should we lead with for a CFO at a mid-market retailer?*
- *Build a message map for this product.*
- *Review this ad against our messaging framework.*

## Things to know

- Product status is frozen when you configure the skill. When a product reaches general availability or is retired, edit the skill so Opal stops enforcing the old status.
- For large portfolios, upload a document instead of typing everything.
- Tone and wording come from your brand voice skill.

## Update the skill

When Optimizely publishes a new version, **Update** displays on the skill's card in the Skills Directory. Opal keeps the information you provided during setup and asks only for anything the new version adds. See [Update a skill](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).
