The **Keyword Strategy** skill is an org skill in the Optimizely Opal Skills Directory that maintains your target keyword list, including volume data and visibility gaps, so every content creator and agent-assisted workflow is aligned to the same search strategy.

It applies to everyone in your organization. An administrator installs and configures it once.

## Skill details

- **Shortcut** – `/keyword-strategy`
- **Type** – Org skill
- **Setup** – Required

## What the skill does

- Checks every target keyword against your priority list and flags off-list keywords.
- Sources every number from a connected tool or your uploaded export, with a date, or marks it "not verified".
- Applies keyword best practices to briefs and placement, including cannibalization and duplicate-page checks.
- Tracks visibility in traditional search and AI answer engines separately.

## Before you begin

- You must have the **Manage Instructions** permission to install this skill. If you do not, click **Request** in the Skills Directory to ask an administrator to install it.
- Opal uses whichever SEO, rank-tracking, Search Console, or analytics tool you connect. Without one, upload an export or paste data.
- Have your answers and files ready. Opal asks for them during setup.

## Information Opal asks for

Opal asks for the following during setup. You can skip optional items.

- **What You Sell, Where You Rank, and Who You Compete With** (Required) – Your business scope, site, markets, and named search competitors.
- **Priority Keywords by Topic** (Required) – One keyword per line under topic headings. Tiers and owning pages are free text.
- **Keyword Research Export** (Optional) – Supplies numbers only. It can't add keywords to your priority list.
- **Known Visibility Challenges** (Optional) – If you skip this, Opal derives challenges from connected data.
- **Keyword Rules Specific to Your Team** (Optional) – If you skip this, Opal applies a default demand gate of 20 monthly searches or 50 impressions in 90 days.

## Install the skill

1. Go to **Directory > Skills**.
2. Find **Keyword Strategy** and click **Install**.
3. In the **Setup required** dialog, click **Set up in chat**.
4. Answer Opal's questions and upload any files it asks for.
5. Confirm the details when Opal asks.

For details about browsing, installing, updating, and uninstalling skills, see [Skills Directory overview](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).

## Use the skill

After setup, enter `/keyword-strategy` in Opal Chat to run the skill on demand. Opal also applies it automatically when your request matches its **When to use** conditions. Try prompts like the following:

- *Check these target keywords for my new blog post against our priority list.*
- *Give me a registry status report for our keywords.*
- *Diagnose why this page lost search visibility.*

## Things to know

- Your keyword list is a snapshot from when you configured the skill. Opal proposes additions and retirements, but an administrator must edit the skill to change the list.
- Keep the list short and put the long tail in the export. Very large lists slow the skill.
- AI visibility needs repeated runs. Three runs show direction, not precise share.

## Update the skill

When Optimizely publishes a new version, **Update** displays on the skill's card in the Skills Directory. Opal keeps the information you provided during setup and asks only for anything the new version adds. See [Update a skill](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).
