The **Competitive Positioning** skill is an org skill in the Optimizely Opal Skills Directory that logs your key competitors and the positioning angles that resonate most with customers, so your team always knows how to differentiate in any conversation or piece of content.

It applies to everyone in your organization. An administrator installs and configures it once.

## Skill details

- **Shortcut** – `/competitive-positioning`
- **Type** – Org skill
- **Setup** – Required

## What the skill does

- Answers competitor questions from your roster and evidence, not generic model knowledge.
- Builds battlecards, talk tracks, comparison pages, and competitive landscapes.
- Logs field intel and synthesizes win/loss patterns.
- Tags every "why we win" line as Customer-validated, Internal claim, or Public, and marks internal-only material in every output.

## Before you begin

- You must have the **Manage Instructions** permission to install this skill. If you do not, click **Request** in the Skills Directory to ask an administrator to install it.
- Connect a web-browsing tool for public research. Without one, paste competitor pages.
- Have your answers and files ready. Opal asks for them during setup.

## Information Opal asks for

Opal asks for the following during setup. You can skip optional items.

- **What You Sell and Who You Sell It To** (Required) – Your offer and buyer roles.
- **Key Competitors and How You Win** (Required) – One block per competitor: name and category, why you win, why they win, and a rebuttal. You can add a priority line, customer quotes, and public URLs.
- **Battlecards or Competitive Intel Deck** (Optional) – If you upload both internal and customer-facing versions, Opal takes facts from the internal one.
- **Customer Feedback and Win-Loss Evidence** (Optional) – Without it, Opal leaves out customer-proof sections.
- **House Rules for Competitive Content** (Optional) – Defaults are no competitor names in public copy and a six-month freshness window.

## Install the skill

1. Go to **Directory > Skills**.
2. Find **Competitive Positioning** and click **Install**.
3. In the **Setup required** dialog, click **Set up in chat**.
4. Answer Opal's questions and upload any files it asks for.
5. Confirm the details when Opal asks.

For details about browsing, installing, updating, and uninstalling skills, see [Skills Directory overview](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).

## Use the skill

After setup, enter `/competitive-positioning` in Opal Chat to run the skill on demand. Opal also applies it automatically when your request matches its **When to use** conditions. Try prompts like the following:

- *How do we win against this competitor in a late-stage deal?*
- *Build a battlecard for this competitor.*
- *Log this field intel from today's call.*

## Things to know

- Intel goes stale unless someone edits the skill or uploads new battlecards. Opal flags stale intel only when your sources carry dates.
- Public copy never names a competitor unless your house rules allow it.
- Fewer than five data points is reported as a signal, not a pattern.

## Update the skill

When Optimizely publishes a new version, **Update** displays on the skill's card in the Skills Directory. Opal keeps the information you provided during setup and asks only for anything the new version adds. See [Update a skill](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).
