The **Brand Voice Guidelines** skill is an org skill in the Optimizely Opal Skills Directory that enforces your brand's tone, style, and grammar rules across every piece of content your team produces, automatically rewriting anything that doesn't meet the standard.

It applies to everyone in your organization. An administrator installs and configures it once.

## Skill details

- **Shortcut** – `/brand-voice-guidelines`
- **Type** – Org skill
- **Setup** – Required

## What the skill does

- Checks written content against one set of voice rules and rewrites anything that doesn't meet them.
- Applies your voice pillars, a built-in tone standard, a ban list with preferred swaps, and writing mechanics such as the Oxford comma, contractions, numerals, and sentence case.
- Calibrates tone by channel, such as website, product UI, docs, email, social, and ads.
- Avoids generic copy and repeated sentence structure, and offers three to five differentiated headline angles.

## Before you begin

- You must have the **Manage Instructions** permission to install this skill. If you do not, click **Request** in the Skills Directory to ask an administrator to install it.
- Have your answers and files ready. Opal asks for them during setup.

## Information Opal asks for

Opal asks for the following during setup. You can skip optional items.

- **Brand Name** (Required) – Your brand name.
- **Brand and Audience** (Required) – A one-line positioning statement covering who the content is written for and what sets your brand apart.
- **Voice Pillars** (Required) – Your voice pillars, one per line.
- **Brand Material** (Optional) – A style guide, samples of shipped copy, or both. Uploaded material overrides what you type, and shipped samples override the guide where they disagree.
- **Brand-Specific Bans and Swaps** (Optional) – Words to ban outright, and words to swap for preferred alternatives. If you skip this, only the built-in ban list applies.
- **Reference Lines** (Optional) – Example lines that show the energy and angle you want. Opal matches the style, not the wording.

## Install the skill

1. Go to **Directory > Skills**.
2. Find **Brand Voice Guidelines** and click **Install**.
3. In the **Setup required** dialog, click **Set up in chat**.
4. Answer Opal's questions and upload any files it asks for.
5. Confirm the details when Opal asks.

For details about browsing, installing, updating, and uninstalling skills, see [Skills Directory overview](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).

## Use the skill

After setup, enter `/brand-voice-guidelines` in Opal Chat to run the skill on demand. Opal also applies it automatically when your request matches its **When to use** conditions. Try prompts like the following:

- *Write a homepage hero headline for our new feature.*
- *Rewrite this email so it matches our brand voice.*
- *Give me five headline angles for this ad.*

## Things to know

- Because this is an org skill, one person's answers set the brand voice for everyone in your organization. There is no draft or approval step, so review your answers before you confirm them.

## Update the skill

When Optimizely publishes a new version, **Update** displays on the skill's card in the Skills Directory. Opal keeps the information you provided during setup and asks only for anything the new version adds. See [Update a skill](docId\:jw_PeWvKOXocy3ihL5h9w).
